LIGHTING,PLUMBING & CABINET HARDWARE SELECTIONS - PROJECT SHAKE FRONT
When selecting lighting and plumbing fixtures, door hardware, cabinet knobs and pulls, think of them as all as being a part of the same subcategory...taking the approach that they need to relate well to one another without feeling overly matched or contrived. To pull this off though, it takes careful thought and consideration.
FINISHES & COLORS
The best place to start with creating a curated collection is with the finishes.
If you want a more timeless, transitional look, the best approach would be to match all the finishes. For instance if you found the perfect light fixture for the master bathroom in a polished nickel then let that be your jumping off point for the rest of the selections used throughout the space.
If you prefer a more eclectic look, then mixing the metal finishes would be the way to go, *I'll share more about this topic in another post to come.
When making selections play close attention to the over-all shape and design detail. For example, notice if there is round or square detailing?
Pair things that have similar shapes. To better illustrate, let's go back to the example of finding the perfect light fixture for the master bathroom. Notice the detail. Is it generally square, or round? Is there stacked elements, or is it more minimalistic? Let this be your next jumping off point for the rest of your selections. If the light fixture has minimal detail, then look for plumbing fixtures, door and cabinet hardware that also have that in common.
Next, notice the lines of the metal itself; besides being straight or curved, thick or thin, does the metal have flat or rounded edges? Once again, reference back to the favorite master bath light fixture and let it guide you.
SHAKE FRONT PROJECT CURATED COLLECTIONS
Take a look at a few of the design boards from the Shake Front Project where I put together a curated collection, pairing fixtures and hardware that relate well to one another without out looking stale and predictable. Notice how I based my chooses on the finish, shape and line for each of the selections.
HERE'S A RECAP
THE TAKE AWAY
Consider all the lighting and plumbing fixtures, door and cabinet hardware as being part of a subcategory,
Select things on how they relate based on the finishes, shapes and lines.
Stay away from the instant, and ready-made look and instead take the time to create your own curated, and dynamic collection.
Check back to see how these beautiful, curated selections look in the space.
And yes, I have paint on my hands, arms and elbows from an outdoor shower we designed and built at my own house but hey, the entry light fixture is gorgeous!
See you next time!
